I sat with the great Irma Thomas at her kitchen table while she cooked red beans and rice. I listened intently as she told me stories about Katrina and how it swallowed up the entire neighborhood we were sitting in. She's about as New Orleans as it gets. I spent a couple of hours admiring wrought iron railings on beautiful old houses in the Garden District. Most of the wrought iron was made in Madison, Indiana and shipped down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River on it's way to New Orleans. I sat on the banks of the Mississippi for a while. The breeze coming off the water was a good 15 degrees cooler than the air temperature in the city. The water held a cold reminder of it's journey from up north. There was a parade passing in front of my hotel room. It seems like there's always a parade. I woke up early before flying home and wondered through back alleys and side streets with Professor Longhair as my soundtrack. Had some of the best biscuits I've had in a while at a diner, but I can't remember the name of the place. Most of my time was spent working on a very cool project that I'll tell you about sometime soon. I crammed as much as I could into a 36 hour trip, and then I flew back home to Indiana. . . . . . . . #travel #neworleans #blackandwhite #blues #indianapolis #Indiana #soul #history #katrina A post shared by Otis Gibbs (@otisgibbs) on Feb 22, 2020 at 6:50am PST
